Glocal Toolkits

Writing by Jer on Monday, 21 of April , 2008 at 3:24 pm

Over the course of the Glocal project, we will be releasing a series of software, hardware and conceptual toolkits that will be available for download. All of these toolkits are free for anyone to use. Below is a list of the currently available toolkits. Check back here often – there are a lot of exciting things to come!

1. Motion Sequence Tool – V 2.6 (11/28/08).

The Motion Sequence Application (MSA) is a simple tool for converting motion into a still image sequence via a web cam.  On-screen controls allow users to configure the size and make-up of the image grid. Images can be saved out of the application as .JPGs, for upload to the Glocal Image Pool. Download includes Windows, Linux, and Mac versions of the application as well as a .PDF educator’s resource.

The Motion Sequence Application requires a webcam to function. Users on some platforms may need to update software for this application to run properly – see the included documentation for details.

2. Multiple Exposure Tool – V 2.6 (11/28/08).

The Multiple Exposure Application (MEA) is a simple tool for layering captured photos to create photographic images via a web cam or connected video cam. Download includes Windows, Linux, and Mac versions of the application.

3. Digital Camera Arduino Hack – (06/26/08).

This Arduino-based hack lets you take pictures by triggering your camera’s shutter on a time delay (every ten seconds, every 20, every ten minutes…), or by plain old sound: you make a noise and the camera takes a picture. We’ve been perfecting it and it is very sensitive- anything from a whisper to a loud sound will make it trigger the camera.

Click the image below for a zip file with the schematic in PDF and Eagle CAD formats, and the Arduino code too.

4. Long Exposure Tool – V 2.6 (11/28/08).

These images above were created with Glocal Long Exposure application, our newest toolkit, which is now available for public download from our toolkits page.

The Long Exposure Application is designed to mimic traditional long exposure photography. Early photographers did not have the luxury of split second shutter speeds, and the long duration of the exposures created a different kind of photographic aesthetic.

About The Glocal Project

Glocal (global + local) is an immense, collaborative and multifaceted digital art project that examines the making, sharing and exhibiting of images in the 21st century. Working out of the Surrey Art Gallery’s TechLab, the artists behind Glocal pose questions about the nature of photography at this point in our history: What is a photograph? What is a camera? What is a photographer?
