How to: Contributing to Glocal via Flickr

Writing by Jer on Wednesday, 30 of April , 2008 at 7:46 pm

Flickr is an online photo archive with upwards of 2 billion archived photos. While most of the images are uploaded by the general public, Flickr has also been active in archiving institutional photography collections, like those from the Library of Congress. We’ll be aggregating images from Flickr for the Glocal project, so uploading your images there is an easy way to get involved.

The image gallery that you see above this post is a live feed from the Flickr Glocal pool – it shows you all of the images that have been contributed to the project so far. As things start to pick-up steam over the next little while, you’ll see lots of updates – so check back often for new images.

And, of course, those images can come from you! If you have been using one of our toolkits to make some interesting images, or if you have photos that have been taken in the Glocal spirit, you can upload them to your Flickr account and have them become part of the Glocal photo pool.

GLOCAL IN SECOND LIFE! Phase One – Promotion and Speculation

Writing by Jeremy on Monday, 28 of April , 2008 at 2:11 pm

Here is a portrait of GLOCAL’s Coordinator Newton Dinzeo (Jeremy Owen Turner). Dinzeo is sitting on a tiny GLOCAL ad in the Edmonton-based Second Life property, Canada in SL. This sign may be appear relatively insignificant in the grander scheme of things but in the weeks to come, GLOCAL will have a more solid presence in this increasingly mainstream metaverse. The faces on Newton’s pants actually belong to the Coordinator himself in RL…His image was filtered via the first version of the Motion Sequencing Application (a free download on this blog) and then was texture-mapped as clothing. Newton Dinzeo has his own blog which you can check out here.

Hello GLOCAL Blog readers!

GLOCAL is finally getting down to entering Second Life and setting down virtually local and global roots there.

We have started with the placement of a tiny ad in the Canada in SL property and will be adding a larger and flashier billboard very shortly. In the long-term, we will also likely have the Surrey Art Gallery’s Techlab reproduced in Second Life :-) At the moment, we are beginning the first phase of promotion and property/architectural speculation…Here are some more photos of our first official ventures into this Brave Not-So-New virtual world…

Pinhole Camera Kits

Writing by Sylvia on Wednesday, 16 of April , 2008 at 1:14 pm

The Corbis website now offers the opportunity to download, print and assemble various  funky paper pinhole cameras.

The Readymech pinhole cameras from corbis.com/readycam are available in five designs which are downloadable as colour PDFs, complete with assembly directions – rather than inserting film -> trying placing a digital or cellphone camera on timer to create some low tech image sequences.

Glocal Toolkit #1: Motion Sequence Application

Writing by Jer on Wednesday, 9 of April , 2008 at 9:19 pm

We are happy to announce that our first Glocal Toolkit is available for download. This software toolkit allows you to create motion sequences from a webcam feed. The Toolkit includes the Motion Sequence Application for Mac, Windows, and Linux platforms and instructions for use. Also included is a worksheet for educators titled ‘Looking at Events in Time”, which looks at the various ways time and events can and have been represented in art.

Over the next few days, I will be posting some tips and tricks that you can try with the application, and will provide instructions for uploading your contributions to our Flickr pool. The next version of this Glocal toolkit allows for import of pre-recorded video. It is currently being tested, and will be released sometime next week. Stay tuned!

About The Glocal Project

Glocal (global + local) is an immense, collaborative and multifaceted digital art project that examines the making, sharing and exhibiting of images in the 21st century. Working out of the Surrey Art Gallery’s TechLab, the artists behind Glocal pose questions about the nature of photography at this point in our history: What is a photograph? What is a camera? What is a photographer?
